November 2023

Chapter Highlights

  • Hundreds of DSA members from across California joined 50,000 people on November 4th in San Francisco for a rally and march on the International Day of Solidarity with Palestine. EBDSA continues to struggle for a free Palestine, helping run Ceasefire Now phone banks, and pushing unions to take public pro-Palestine stances through our Labor 4 Palestine work.

Hundreds of DSA members marching in solidarity with Palestinians

  • East Bay DSA worked with the Richmond Progressive Alliance, our endorsed elected officials, and other community groups to pass a historic resolution at the Richmond City Council, standing in solidarity with the people of Gaza. Hundreds spoke in support, and Richmond became the first city in the country to publicly support the Palestinian people! To get involved with our work supporting Palestine, check our chapter calendar.
  • The Labor Committee held a spooky Halloween party at Tamarack, where we raised over $1400 dollars to send workers to next year's Labor Notes conference! Attendees included AOC, Winnie the Pooh, a George Jackson quote, and the Specter of Communism!
  • The Climate Action Committee organized a large contingent of DSA members from the East Bay and San Francisco to attend the #no2APEC rally, which disrupted the first day of a week-long series of summits, shadowy business dealings, and networking between agents of the capitalist class from Asia and the Americas. There was also a night school earlier in the week to educate members about the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, and a large labor rally on the 15th!

“[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.”

– Albert Einstein

Electoral Committee

Our chapter has taken the lead to successfully elect socialists to office across the East Bay from school board to city council. Our Electoral Committee advises the chapter on endorsements for candidates and ballot measures, organizes campaigns through canvasses, and pressures elected leaders to support legislation for the working class.

We enthusiastically endorsed Jovanka Beckles for California State Senate in District 7 which covers most of the north East Bay, including Oakland, Berkeley, and Richmond. Jovanka is a current AC Transit Board and East Bay DSA member. The Electoral Committee is organizing canvasses starting in December to talk with neighbors about Jovanka’s record as an advocate for public services and against corporate power. To get involved with the Electoral Committee, email elections@eastbaydsa.org.

RSVP for our first canvass for Jovanka on Saturday, December 2 at 10AM. >>

“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”
