Upcoming Events - November 27, 2016

Wow! It was great seeing so many of you at the meeting this Sunday and to hear how fired up everybody is. Also, Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) nationally has grown more than 10 percent in the last week alone, so keep spreading the word. We just wanted to post some links to the events we talked about.

Standing Rock

Tomorrow morning, folks are attending "Bay Area Stands with Standing Rock" opposing the Dakota Access pipeline. It starts with a sunrise ceremony at 6:30 a.m. in Civic Center in San Francisco, followed by a march at 8:00 a.m. to the Army Corps of Engineers' San Francisco location.

"Capitalism" by Ilan Ziv

East Bay DSA is co-hosting a showing of a new six-part documentary: "Capitalism" by Ilan Ziv. East Bay DSA is partnering with Old Lesbians Organizing for Change and Take 5 Café to show the six segments of this documentary each Wednesday for the next six weeks at 5:30 p.m. starting on November 16 at Take 5 Café, 3130 Sacramento St. in Berkeley (between Ashby and Alcatraz).

It is easy to see that capitalism is behind many of our society's worst problems: oil companies keep poisoning our air, water, and land while the planet burns; drug companies reap billions in profit while medicines are priced out of reach; and CEO salaries continue to climb while workers and retirees scramble to pay the rent and put bread on the table. But how has this system evolved, and how much do we really know about it?

According to the series' website: "Blending interviews with some of the world's great historians, economists, anthropologists, and social critics with on-the-ground footage shot in 22 countries, 'Capitalism' questions the myth of the unfettered free market, explores the nature of debt and commodities, and retraces some of the great economic debates of the last 200 years." Each segment is 52 minutes long, and we will have time for discussion after watching the video.

San Francisco DSA

San Francisco just started its own DSA organizing committee, and they are having their first meeting on December 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the San Francisco Public Library. See the Facebook event page for more information.
