Statement on the Candidacy of Pamela Price
In September 2018, East Bay DSA published an endorsement report for our membership on our website with recommendations for electoral endorsements. One candidate included in that report who received a non-endorsement was Pamela Price running for Mayor of Oakland. It has recently come to our attention that there were some inaccuracies and mischaracterizations of Ms. Price included in that report. We would like to correct the record and offer a formal apology to Ms. Price on the following points:
- While we knew that Ms. Price’s DA campaign was supported by many lawyers, we mischaracterized the campaign as being supported by “corporate law firms.” We apologize for this.
- In the report we also asserted that Ms. Price received support from a Soros-funded PAC, but we inadvertently mischaracterized it as direct funding to her campaign as opposed to independent spending.
- Our characterization of Ms. Price’s Ida B. Wells Holding Company income as being “significant” was in the nature of mere opinion derived from facts stated in our document: the amount ($2500) provided to her campaign. This opinion relied exclusively on that fact and not on any other unstated information.
We respect Ms. Price and her record as a civil rights attorney and we hope that East Bay DSA can forge alliances with her in the future on issues of mutual concern.
